I wish that I had more information for you, but I know very little about texting. If you tweet me though (@grade1), I’m happy to RT you and see what we can find out. I know that I follow lots of people that use texting with their students. Maybe somebody else has an idea that [...]

Thanks for your comment, Joy! I use the document camera to show the students how to use the apps, and then they use these apps in small groups through literacy and math centres. This provides a great way for them to create, problem-solve, and really get a chance sharing and learning how to use the [...]

Thanks for the comment, Theresa! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the presentation that you saw on my blog. It’s amazing teachers from my school and from Twitter that inspire me to do so much of what I do! And yes, many teachers at my school are starting to use these tools too. Most of [...]

ThumbnailIt’s been a beautiful weekend here in Ontario, but I really haven’t left the house all weekend. Why? I’ve been attending and presenting at the Reform Symposium : an amazing global conference that I’m so glad that I could be involved in. This is the third Reform Symposium, and while I’ve attended all three, this was the first time [...]

Thanks Jenny! I love seeing self-directed learning too. I was thinking the same thing about the notes too. The funny thing is that my students really wanted to bring their Palm Treos or iPod Touches to take photographs, videos, and notes, but I thought that they might get lost or broken at the African Lion [...]

ThumbnailToday we went on our year-end trip to the African Lion Safari. One of the first questions that appears on a field trip form is what expectations will be met by this trip? Since field trips are supposed to be for educational purposes, I always try to have my students complete a follow-up activity after we come [...]

ThumbnailI’ve always found it difficult to say “goodbye,” and this year is no different. This year though, I’ll be saying goodbye to an administrator that has really made a huge impact on me and on my students. Bev Laporte, our fantastic principal, is retiring in a week. Bev, I’m going to miss you! I’ve been trying [...]

That’s so true, Angie! It took me a while to be willing to ask for help. I’m glad that I started to though. As you said, there are always lots of people around willing to help!

How do I complete the circuit?

Each user has a blog on which they are invited to share insights on the books they are reading; publish creative writing; and participate in appropriate discussions on self-selected topics, topics from the Prompts stream, or teacher directed commentary. Tags and categories help contributors with like bookshelves/interests find one another, and comment on each other's contributions.

Forums within groups allow for further discussion.

Blogs act as student managed digital portfolios.

Comments give opportunity for specific formative assessment from other users and administrators.

Use care when publishing work, when contributing to forums, and when commenting on the output of other writers: when we are all submitting our best, we must also strive to be kind and constructive in our responses to the work of our fellow authors. When we share our writing, we open ourselves up to scrutiny, in the hopes of gaining praise.
